Happy Earth Day Everyone! April 22, 2013

This is such a busy time of year for us…wonder why Earth Day would be busy for an Eco Friendly shop….lol.  Since Earth Day is one of our favorite holidays, we have a great coupon code for everyone!! Get 25% off by saying that you LOVEGREEN when you see us at Earth Jam next weekend. Not to forget those that are far away….you can also use the the coupon code LOVEGREEN on our Etsy site for 25% off. We have two of our favorite shows this time of year.  Last weekend we were at the Ogden Nature Center’s Earth Day Celebration.   Here is what they had to say about the celebration on their facebook page: Earth Day Celebration Today from 12-4! A native plant sale, great food, workshops, animals, gardening, and lots of fun for the kiddos including a rock climbing wall, llama rides, head wreaths, puppet shows and more! Artists, entertainment and green gurus from all over Utah! Come learn and play!  To find out more about this amazing place you can find them at: http://www.ogdennaturecenter.org/

We did have a great time this year.  Usually I take a ton of fun pictures to share with everyone but this year we had rain and lots of it.  So I would set up the booth and then pull everything into the middle again as the rain started again.  I did not even think about pictures until it was over and I was taking my tent down…a duh moment!  So all pictures in this post are from facebook or google. It was a brilliantly beautifully day because of the rain.  It was cool and refreshing and I am so grateful for my good friend Athena from Simply Eden Goat Milk Soap.  She let us borrow two of her extra tent sides so we did not get anything ruined (why we did not bring our own on a day like this could be added to the duh moments…lol).  We love her and adore all of her amazing products!  You can find her at: http://www.SimplyEden.com

Yes, these soaps, oils and lotions smell and feel as good as they look!!

She raises her own goats and they are so cute.  She brought them out to the Earth Day Celebrations and all the kids loved them!  We went out to her house a few weeks ago and had so much fun playing with her goats and their babies.   Future pictures to of that.

One of the reasons that I started my own business was to be able to donate and give to causes I believe in.  I for sure believe in helping the Earth so we have donated some fun items to tonight’s get together.

This weekend we will be participating with Earth Jam down in Salt Lake City.  This is always a fun event with amazing music, great artists and of course the coolest people to come and see everything.  Here is what they have to say on facebook: Earth Jam Productions is a non-profit organization that comes together every April in celebration of Earth Day. Our annual Festival is held in Liberty Park located in Salt Lake City, UT. We offer a variety of different activities that all help educate on bettering the environment and bringing people and community’s together. Earth Jam is a FREE FAMILY EVENT

What a busy month we have had! May 17, 2012

We have been so busy that we are finally catching up on the blog.

One of my favorite places to take my family is to the Ogden Nature Center.  It is a beautiful wilderness preserve right in the middle of Ogden, Utah.  We have loved the kids classes they teach, summer concerts,  festivals, birds that live there and amazing other wild life like deers, frogs and beavers…AWESOME.  You can find them on facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Ogdennaturecenter or  their website: http://www.ogdennaturecenter.org/   Their website has this to say “Located in the heart of Ogden, you’ll find a 152-acre nature preserve and education center open to the public year-round. Visitors enjoy 1.5 miles of walking trails, picnic areas, tree houses, bird blinds and an exhibit of live birds of prey.  Two of Utah’s greenest buildings are on site to teach about sustainable structures. A unique gift shop is located in the Visitor Center. The Ogden Nature Center offers a wide variety of classes & workshops for all ages including art, photography, birding, wildlife in Utah, outdoor recreation, conservation, sustainability, summer camps and more.”   This year we did a show here on Earth Day.  Here are some of the fun pictures from this year:

Setting up is always fun!

Next we went to Earth Jam in Liberty Park, Salt Lake City, Utah.  We always have so much fun going to this.  The music is amazing and I always meet the nicest people there.  You can find them on facebook to learn more about this great festival: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000232392689  or thier website at :http://earth-jam.org/  Their website has this to say about the festival “Earth Jam Productions is a non-profit organization that comes together every April in celebration of Earth Day. The music of Earth Jam is the heart of the organization. We have 2 stages The Earth Stage, The Fire Stage, that we fill with local talent, performing arts, and speakers.
We have a Goddess Pageant that is held in March, this is a way to find beauty and self expression in our community. Our Earth Goddess plays a strong roll in bringing Earth Jam into the communities.  The Children’s Garden Center helps teach our children lasting memories on Global consciousness and building a safer future for generations to come. We do this through the art of creation by recycling, gardening, solar and wind power and the basic respect of loving our Earth and being aware of our environment.”    One of my other favorite things about this festival is that I got to be next to An Array of Artistry.  She has amazing items with her Resurrected Denim, Henna and Cloth Diapers.   You can find her at: https://www.facebook.com/HennaOgden  Here are some of our fun pictures from this festival:

This year we are excited to be going to Earth Jam down in Salt Lake City at Liberty Park this weekend.  Last year we had so much fun.  We were right next to one of the music stages and got to hear good music all weekend.  We were also next to one of our best friends which is awesome to have a great booth partner (big hugs to An Array of Artistry)

Here is a link to a great article about it this year:  http://www.globeslcc.com/2012/04/25/jam-out-in-celebration-of-mother-earth/

or check out their actual site at: http://www.earth-jam.org/

Last year we got some great pictures of the happenings (we will show you some more of this year when we get back and some of Earth Day at the Ogden Nature Center):

Hope you come and see us again this year!

Earth Day Tips and Contest Winner! April 22, 2012

The Earth flag is not an official flag, since ...

The Earth flag is not an official flag, since there is no official governing body over Earth. The flag holds a photo transfer of a NASA image of the Earth on a dark blue background. It has been associated with Earth Day.

Earth Day…what a wonderful day!  A day to celebrate the Earth and how to take care of her.  Since we love to recycled, upcycle, reuse and repurpose, it is like Earth Day is our favorite holiday!  Move over Christmas, Halloween, Valentines, Winter Solstice, Kwanzaa,  and Thanksgiving.  We LOVE Earth Day!

Here are some great suggestions from some of our readers on how to celebrate Earth Day:

  • *Easy one: Plant something beatiful.Good for the earth and your spirit
  • *Visit Red Butte Gardens! It is nature at it’s most beautiful and it is so peaceful and serene that you leave feeling at peace. I’d say the Nature Center but I figured that was a given.
  • *Get a programmable thermostat. We did and the last two years our electric bills have dropped!
  • *Not just for Earth Day….but recently I’ve loved going up into the mountains and “reconnecting” with them. Taking off my shoes and feeling the cold ground (as it can be now..hehe), truly feeling a connection between the Earth and myself, and just being grateful for it. Also trying to be more self sufficient in our intake….we have birds that give us eggs now and we use their ponds to water their yard and quite a bit of our backyard as well.
  • *I like to go to the park with my kiddos, have a picnic, let them play on the playground, and go on an outdoor scavenger hunt! This site has a lot of optionshttp://www.scavengerhuntsforkids.com/naturehunts.html

I was also part of an Upcyclers Blog today where everyone had to give a tip.  My tip was: One of the best ways to help the Earth is to Reuse items. So instead of throwing clothing away create a Clothing Swap. Then your friends, neighbors and coworkers can come and swap clothes for themselves and their kids.  To find this awesome article with more tips and some great coupons to other upcyclers shops and a coupon to my shop too: http://love2upcycle.blogspot.com/2012/04/sustainable-sundays-24-hour-earth-day.html?showComment=1335104842094#c489320377707593981

This is a great article on how Earth Day even came to be http://earthday.envirolink.org/history.html.  This is written by Sentator Gaylord Nelson who got Earth Day to even happen.  Give him a HUGE hug of gratitude!   He explains what steps he did to make it happen and how on April 22, 1970 was the first Earth Day and how it really took all of the grassroots local people to make it happen.  It helps me to continue to believe that one committed person can make a difference.   I found this article on this great site:  http://www.envirolink.org/.   You can find out about different Earth Day celebrations happening all over, find thousands of environmental resources, online new information and so much more.  This is a great website to check out.  They have such great information on how we came to celebrate the Earth.  I love to think about how it started and what it is today.

No mater how you choose to celebrate our Earth today,  I hope you have a wonderful day!

P.S.  We also had a contest happening for a $10 gift certificate to our shop…want to know who the winner is??  Lets draw a name out of a hat……

My son is picking the name from a hat (my kids just love to do this!)….the winner is The WoodenBee!  Congrats Bee!

Lettuce Make A Spring Shrug TrashNTees Tutorial

I’m told it is Spring. Though I’ve seen the sun a few times- I’m still not yet completely convinced until its time to cut my grass. I worked up this quick and easy tutorial which will help you transform your humbum regular old long sleeve tshirt into a fun and fancy shrug/cardigan perfect to wear over a sundress for a day at the races or pair it up w/ a tank and jeans for a trip to the park. Go ahead and grab something to cut with and something to cut- and we’ll get started!

I started with this medium weighted long sleeve shirt from Coldwater Creek. It was comfortable but I didn’t like the length in the tummy area. (Remember I had two babies!?) I’m a firm believer in the fact that I should be able to raise my hands up above my head and not show any stretch marks.

 1) Hack off the bottom of the shirt. It looks like I took off about 4 or 5 inches here… Remember theres no right or wrong way to the design, so feel free to make variations along the way.

2) Crop your sleeves to preferred length.

 3) It looks tricky but I promise you its not. Fold you shirt so that its creased in the center front (and back) Tip: line up the seams! Feel free to use pins and chalk here- I tend to create on the go so I just went at it w/ the cutters.  Chalkers: From the bottom you want to draw a semi circle on the font center. Heres how it looked after I cut mine:

Your shirt should look something like this after you’ve made your last cut.
*I went back and cur the remaining bit of neckline, which could’ve been taken care of in step #3

Head over to your dandy sewing machine and lay down some thread. You’ll finish all of the edges with this lettuce edge. You do not need a high dollar machine, additional foot, or mad skills to pull this off. Creating a lettuce ruffle is simple! Set your machine to the narrowest zig zag setting, and feel free to experiment with width. Each machine setting will probably be different, so dont jump the gun. Practice on scrap before you go for it. (Trust me!)

To create the “lettuce” look to the edge you need to stretch your fabric.  You have to use fabric that stretches. (Paat! tshirts stretch!) If your fabric doesn’t have a good amount of stretch to it, forget about a lettuce edge. It isn’t going to work.

Now, you need to stretch from both sides of the fabric. When I say both sides, I mean in front of the presser foot as well as behind. That means you need to use BOTH hands, no drinking coffee while sewing ruffles. You want to stretch the fabric as much as you possibly can while sewing and gently guiding the fabric through your machine.

Finished up and still have time clean. Yay. (or not)

Thanks for reading along, be sure to let me know if you have any questions or if you’ve tried this tutorial I’d love to know how it turned out. I hope you’ll take some time to check out my other tutorials, as well as tutorials featured here as part of the Recycle, Reduce, Reuse, RECREATE Earth Day Event 2011.   Find more great Eco Everything at http://trashn2tees.blogspot.com/

I am getting so excited to celebrate Earth Day at the Ogden Nature Center Earth Day Festival. This is happening tomorrow and we will have a booth there to sell all of our great recycled, up-cycled, repurposed, reused, made from the earth treasures.  While getting ready for this I found these amazing egg-shaped chocolate molds at the thrift store.  I instantly knew they would make the cutest recycled crayons for the Festival tomorrow.  They are turning out so cute and I will post pictures of them later.  Happy Early Earth Day!

“Treat the Earth well. It was not given to you by your parents. It was loaned to you by your children”
~ Kenyan Proverb

I just found this quote today and it reminded me of why I created the business I did.  I believe that what we do today affects our children and grandchildren etc..   I heard  a quote yesterday about a group of people who when first greeting each other would ask “How are the children?”.  This had such an impact on me.   What if we all did ask that question before we did something?  How would that change the way people create or do things.  If we really treasure our children, our future shouldn’t that be the question we are asking?
